  • COBRA Subsidies Unfair

The Obama subsidy for those on COBRA (EBSA) is unfair and confusing. It stipulates that 3 things must be true. There are variations but these are mandates. 1. Must be eligible for COBRA from September 1 to 12/31/09. 2) must have elected COBRA and 3. Must relate to an involuntary termination taking place during the above period.

I happen to have been terminated on August 31. However, under the rules, I am eligible for COBRA on September 1st. However, as the termination did not take place on September 1st or laater, I am not allowed the benefit.  ok, if you fit the no.3 rule, there can never be anyone who is eligible on September 1st for COBRA as that would mean they were terminated on August 31. We could go around and around and around but in the end, Obama did not read the exact words so I suggest the following:

The actual date of termination should have nothing to do with be eligible for EBSA. If you find yourself unemployed, from no action of your own, during the period starting September 1, 2009, you should be allowed to apply for the COBRA subsidies.

Once again, I should be outraged, but instead I find myself simply bemused at someone's arrogant stupidity.  Bemused because he said it right out there in front of the entire world, exposing his idiocy for all to see.  What more can I add to that?

As you may have heard, Earth Hour is one hour a year when businesses and individuals are urged to turn out any inessential lights.  The electricity savings can be substantial, but it is primarily a reminder, and a show of personal commitment to the environment.  Electricity is expensive, and if everyone turned off just one extra light a year, we would save a shocking amount of money in electricity fees, as well as a considerable amount of carbon emissions and fossil fuels.

Is turning off a lamp once a year for an hour going to save the planet?  No, but it reminds people that we would like to.  And if everyone makes a small change, it can add up quickly.  (This is also known as the Superman 2 Theory of Economics, which later became the Office Space Theory of Economics.)
