One thing I have to complement Rush on is his policy of posting verbatim (I assume they are verbatim…) transcripts from his radio show on his website. It makes it easy for someone like me to catch up with what he's saying, without actually having to listen to his radio show. (Shudder!)
In this case, Rush has posted the relevant transcript from an event which spanned an entire three hour broadcast. He called it The EIB Network Female Summit, and it was brought into being because his latest polling numbers showed a 31% gap in his approval ratings between men and women.
31% is pretty significant. ( I find it heartening.) What is also significant is that Rush claims not to understand why women don't like him as much as men do.
Rush, I have one word for you: feminazi.
Although Rush Limbaugh may not have invented the word "feminazi," he was its primary champion and proponent of its use. For many women, the word "feminazi" is virtually synonymous with Rush Limbaugh himself. It characterizes both his stance on gender issues, and his combative "if you're not with me, you're 100% evil" black and white outlook on the world.
In the past, Limbaugh has applied the term "feminazi" to anything he doesn't like. Which is to say, anything which violates his conservative, religion-based public stance. And where does that stance end? Which of your actions will or will not be branded "femnaziism"? There's no way to tell. Limbaugh essentially equates anything which promotes gender equality or women's issues with the Nazi party.
That's no way to a woman's heart.
But instead of saying "Well, I can understand why women may not dig my show as much as men do," Rush feigns innocence. He puts on his little boy face, and bats his eyes, and asks women to call in. Because now, apparently, we're going to have an honest and open conversation about Rush's recidivist opinions about women's issues.
Ha ha! Just kidding.
For starters, instead of hitting the streets and talking to women at random, Rush asks them to call into his show. The selection bias for "women who listen to my show and therefore hear me asking them to call in" is pretty phenomenal. I'm already skeptical of the selection pool, because as far as I'm concerned, listening to Rush Limbaugh's radio broadcast automatically means you're a malleable idiot. (I don't listen to his show - I read the transcripts - and even then, I can barely stand it.)
Unsurprisingly, most of the female callers tell Rush that they don't like him because someone told them not to like him. This fits well with my "malleable idiot" theory, doesn't it?
Rush Limbaugh then seals the deal by arguing with his callers. He instructs them how to feel about him, and why. (He calls these "teaching moments," and I suppose they are, in a way.) Nothing is going to raise your approval rating with women like telling them that their opinions are wrong, and instructing them how they should feel!
